Barrelhouse Blues

from Tweakin' Some Twang by John Lee Sanders

/

about

Written by John Lee Sanders and Chris Caswell.

I started learning piano from my brother Chip Sanders, who introduced me to so many greats, Ray Charles, Fats Dominio, Jerry Lee Lewis.
At age 5 years old, my parents took me to see Sweet Emma Barrett, New Orleans piano legend, at Preservation Hall in the French Quarter, born 1897, one of the originators of jazz piano, with the Original Tuxedo Jazz Orchestra, I'll never forget the way she played, and the way her music made me feel, and I think there's some of her spirit on this track.

The old upright piano at my parents house, was the center of life at our house growing up in Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana, with everything from Blues, Broadway, Boogie, Gospel, Bach, Bacharach, and Beethoven. I've been inspired so much by Dr. John, who I got to work and record with, Professor Longhair, who's daughter Pat Byrd I've recently come to know and love. So many other inspiring piano players who I've met, or studied, Jon Cleary, Jellyroll Morton, Scott Joplin, Allen Toussaint, James Booker, and many more.
